WSPR and Ubuntu 10.10 – Efforts Continue

As reported previously, I'm trying to get WSPR to run on Ubuntu 10.10. However so far the best I'd attained was for it to crash after going through a receive process. Well, I've created a VirtalBox VM and have played further.

First Issue (Solved)

The first issue was that at start up I received a whole lot of errors (this is on a fresh basic Ubuntu 10.10 install):

******************************************************************
WSPR Version 2.0_r1714 , by K1JT
Run date:   Tue Jan 11 06:23:22 2011 UTC
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)

I found out that was because by default Ubuntu 10.10 has blue tooth audio services installed. Not needing those, I removed the packages.

Second Issue (Kind of solved)

The second issue was, that I went about building from source but then when I attempted to run the resulting binary I got the following:

ian@ian-VirtualBox:~/wspr-src/wspr-2.00.r1714$ ./wspr
python: can't open file '/usr//bin/wspr.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory

This didn't happen with the binary version I downloaded, but apparently it is 'normal' when you build from source yourself. So instead I simply ran it this way:

ian@ian-VirtualBox:~/wspr-src/wspr-2.00.r1714$ sudo python wspr.py

That gave me success and the ouput of:

******************************************************************
WSPR Version 2.0_r1714 , by K1JT
Run date:   Tue Jan 11 06:30:23 2011 UTC

Third Issue (not solved – investigations to commence soon)

So although now I can happily build from source (or for that matter, run the original binaries) after I activate WSPR (as in, when I uncheck the 'Idle' checkbox) it will receive once, show the waterfall, hang around and attempt to receive a second time, but before you see the waterfall it crashes with this output:

******************************************************************
WSPR Version 2.0_r1714 , by K1JT
Run date:   Tue Jan 11 06:30:23 2011 UTC
Expression 'ret' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 1026
Expression 'AlsaOpen( &alsaApi->baseHostApiRep, params, streamDir, &self->pcm )' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 1184
Expression 'PaAlsaStreamComponent_Initialize( &self->capture, alsaApi, inParams, StreamDirection_In, NULL != callback )' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 1428
Expression 'PaAlsaStream_Initialize( stream, alsaHostApi, inputParameters, outputParameters, sampleRate, framesPerBuffer, callback, streamFlags, userData )' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 2100
An error occured while using the portaudio stream

Now others have apparently got it to work on Ubuntu 10.10 when building from source, so my next step is to get the code direct from Subversion and try again. Fingers crossed, will keep you posted.
